USA - Yosamite National Park

6.12.97 - Yosamite National Park

We had arranged to spend the weekend in Yosamite National Park, with another of Joe's cousins doing the driving. We left on Saturday morning, stopping in at Costco on the way to pick up supplies.

We had some fun in Costco, we even took some video of our antics and barely avoided being thrown out (how embarrassing would it be to be thrown out of a Costco). You could even buy hotdogs and pizza by the slice there so we had some hot food before hitting the road again.

We continued on to the park, going first to the Mariposa Groves with the giant Sequoia trees. Those trees were huge! It was quite a long hike in and out of the groves because there was some snow on the roads so we couldn't drive right in. We wandered around for a while in the groves but couldn't spend too long there because we wanted to get back to the car before dark because we weren't very warmly dressed.

We found a really cheap place to stay just outside of the park close to a hostel. We went for dinner at the hostel restaurant and they told us off for not staying with them, but we liked our accommodation -- a two-story log hut with a gas fire, a kitchen and cable TV!

7.12.97 - Yosamite National Park (day 2)

Today in the park kind of sucked -- it was freezing cold and raining all morning. We went for a quick walk to check out some of the waterfalls but didn't stay long because it just wasn't any fun in the rain. We went to drive up the mountain to check out the lakes but turned back after it started snowing heavily and we would have had to put on chains. We heard later they were expecting 3 feet of snow that night!

We decided we might as well head home after that. We passengers fell asleep or read the whole way home in the car while our driver (Joe's cousin) managed to stay awake long enough to get us back to SF. Tomorrow we plan on organising a trip out to Lake Tahoe to do some skiing.
